Go to Telling Them Apart - Idaho

State Capitol, Boise, Idaho.
Antique postcard from the private collection of Valerie Mockaitis. Published by Illustrated Post Card, New York circa 1910.

Originally built as the territorial capitol in 1886, this building, designed by Elijah E. Myers, became the state capitol in 1890 when Idaho joined the Union. The current Idaho state capitol was built in stages next to this one. The central portion of the new capitol was completed in 1912. This old capitol was torn down to make room for the wings added to the new capitol in 1919.

This capitol was completed in 1920. This view has the statuary and the roofs on the wings that were installed on the building. It was created from an actual photograph instead of the architectural plans used for the postcards below.

State Capitol, Boise, Idaho.
Antique postcard published circa 1910.

Postcards published in the "Golden Age of Post Cards" (appx. 1901 to 1915) were extremely popular. Also popular were the many new state capitol buildings being constructed. The combination led to many cards being published based on the architectural plans for the capitols, as this one was.

State Capitol, Boise, Idaho.
Vintage postcard published circa 1915.

This view and the state flower postcard farther up this page were made from the same original drawing as the postcard above. Until the building was completed, the architect's plan was probably the only image of the capitol available.
