State Capitol, Olympia, Washington.
Antique postcard from the private collection of Valerie Mockaitis.
Published by Edward H. Mitchell, Publisher, San Francisco.
Postmarked 1909.
Built in 1892 as the Thurston County Courthouse, this old capitol suffered a fire in 1928 that destroyed the
clock tower and some of the top floor. The tower was never
rebuilt, and the recessed balcony between the entrance
turrets was replaced with a round window in a dormer. In
1949, an earthquake brought down all the conical turrets
except the two at the main entrance. They were not replaced.

The effect of this view with the gold-toned embossing, orange windows, and moon is quite unusual, and a bit spooky.
